Teachers start maths tuition business during lockdown
Three teachers from Beccles and Southwold have joined forces to share their love of Maths with children. Their new company, Tutors That Count, offers one-to-one online and home tuition with a local qualified Maths Teacher. One of the trio, Polly, explained how their ideas came to life…
“I have a son who is currently in the middle of his GCSE’s. His school has gone above and beyond in providing an excellent curriculum provision during lockdown. Like the majority of children, his Year 10 cohort will have missed four months of direct teaching and I was concerned that they were not, in any way, disadvantaged as they move through education and work."
"I currently teach part-time in a local primary school and I have really missed the direct contact with pupils. In April, a friend of mine, that was struggling with balancing working from home with home-schooling, asked if I could help by giving online Maths lessons to her son. It was wonderful to see the progress he made each week and how engaged he was during the lessons."
"As the weeks went by, I began to be contacted by more and more people to ask if I was available to tutor their children too. Having spoken with two friends who are also Maths teachers and experienced in home tuition, we felt there was a great opportunity to support parents and children alike and hence our company ‘Tutors that Count’, was born."
"We are so lucky to be able to work together as our collective experience means that we can cater for pupils from 6-18. In fact, Jane our KS3 / KS4 tutor has been Head of Maths in three local high schools and currently works for two GCSE examining boards. We know parents often worry particularly about how to teach Maths to their children and the fact that we only use qualified Maths specialist teachers will give parents confidence that their children are being taught as they would be if they were attending school."
"Although our company has only been established for three months, we have taken on a wide variety of pupils in terms of both age and ability. Some of our pupils need extra support in Maths whilst others relish the opportunity to be challenged further in a subject they clearly both excel in and enjoy."
"As tutors, it is vitally important to us that every child is treated as an individual learner for it is then that we can really help them to progress and discover what an exciting subject Maths can be.
With GCSE resits now forecast in the Autumn term and catch-up programs being scheduled to run in school from September, we hope to support children and schools in our locality to ensure they reach their full potential in maths."
As social distancing measures relax, Tutors that Count hope to also offer home visits from September. Cost is £24.00 for a 45-minute online tutorial and from £32.00 for a one-hour face-to-face lesson.
