Teaching Experience

I have been privileged to work in a variety of schools since starting my teaching career in 2005.   I have enjoyed various roles including Lead Teacher, Professional Mentor and Advanced Skills Teacher.  I have a BSc (Hons) degree in maths and have taught KS3 and KS4 students across a range of abilities as well as supporting other teachers with their practice

Why do you tutor maths?

I love maths and never tire of bringing it to life for students. I enjoy designing learning sequences as well as embedding opportunities to explore how maths is at the heart of many different areas of life. I am a great believer in giving students a rich and meaningful learning experience.I firmly believe that everyone can develop a love of maths when they are exposed to engaging teaching and are nurtured in an environment that removes the fear of failure. I always aim to create a learning environment that celebrates diversity of experience and ideas, rewards effort and focus, and encourages creativity and freedom of expression.

Other Interests

I love travelling abroad. When I'm not planning my next adventure, I love to cook, garden and when time allows, visit the gym!

Recent Reviews of Sam

In the run-up to her GCSEs, my daughter was very concerned about her maths and the way it was being taught in school. We decided to ask for help from Sam, a very knowledgable maths tutor. Sam provided tutoring to my daughter remotely, outside of school hours, and was patient and understanding with her. She recapped general maths and then concentrated on the areas my daughter found most difficult. A few months later, by the time she sat her GCSEs, my daughter felt confident that she understood maths again, and this was due to Sam. I would not hesitate to recommend Sam  to anyone whose child may be struggling with maths. September 2023

Teaching Experience

I have over 20 years’ experience in teaching mathematics, mostly as leader of mathematics in a middle school. I offer support in maths from primary up to GCSE that can help your child gain confidence and achieve their true potential.

Why do you tutor maths?

I have five years’ experience as a private maths tutor mostly supporting students with their GCSE’s. Often a slightly different explanation or a resource that taps into a preferred learning style is all that is needed to ensure accelerated progress. It is my aim to help students believe in themselves and sail through. I have a patient and understanding approach and it is very pleasing when a child just "sees it" and their confidence flourishes.

Other Interests

Golf, cycling and amateur dramatics

Meet Dr Sharon

Teaching Experience

I have been involved in teaching for six years, teaching lower and upper KS2. As well as teaching I was the Maths, Science, and PE lead. I designed the school maths teaching policy which was subsequently rolled out across the academy.   I have taught both single year and mixed year classes.  I enjoy teaching all abilities whether it be helping students to achieve their SATS or going on further to gain GCSE Foundation maths at year 6. I am also experienced in one to one teaching both face to face and on line.

Why do you tutor maths?

I have always been fascinated by maths.  It is a fundamental tool that helps us understand the world. My background was in science and a good grasp of mathematics is absolutely essential to make progress in this field. I like my lessons to be interactive so that the children learn in an enjoyable environment that allows their confidence to build as well as the curiosity to learn.

Other Interests

Running, yoga, cycling, reading, gardening and walking our dog Millie

Recent Reviews from our Parents

As an ex-teacher myself I was thrilled when Sharon was the teacher in charge of my daughter Isabelle’s learning in Maths at Primary School.  Sharon has a deep passion for guiding students to achieve their full potential. Not only did she inspire Isabelle to want to learn a higher level of Maths (from a curriculum beyond her actual Year 6 age) but she engaged Isabelle in a way that was fun and interesting. This set the seed for Isabelle to be interested in all STEM subjects and relish the puzzles and challenges she finds at senior school.I can’t recommend Sharon highly enough and we were extremely sad when Isabelle finally left her nurturing hands to move on to Senior School.

Now I can see how Sharon teaches I can see why Katie is so passionate about her Maths. Sharon uses a positive teaching style throughout. She is patient, encourages children to have a go and is very clear on explanations. She is great at checking understanding. There is lots of discussion and laughter heard too which is fundemental!  Sharon clearly has a natural talent at reading a child’s learning style, confidence level and can clearly and competently work with children with different abilities and personalites. She puts the child’s welfare first and can tell when a child is tired or needs a break from tutoring. She is a consummate professional. Sharon is an amazing role model for Katie who is interested in STEM subjects. Katie can see from Sharon that a girl can aim high and achieve if she plans, works hard and establishes the love of life long learning.

Teaching Experience

I have taught maths for 21 years to pupils from Year 3 to Year 12. In the past, I have worked in the prep school system, teaching maths to 11+ and 13+ Common Entrance and Scholarship candidates. I currently work part-time at an independent secondary school, teaching maths from Year 7 to Year 12.

Why do you tutor maths?

Quite simply, because I love it!  Whether your child is a potential top-grade student looking for that extra edge, or someone who needs some extra support or a different take to win through, or somewhere in between, I would love to help.

Other Interests

'Our son will now be classed as ‘achieving’ at school. This obviously is down to your patience with him and your ability to engage. He seems a lot more confident in all his subjects as a result. Can I say what an absolute marvel you have been in getting him back on the right path.'

Why do you tutor Maths?

A love of maths and the enjoyment of helping pupils see the pleasure in maths and discover the joy of problem solving that is often part of maths. I love to help pupils have those “wow” moments when they realise they understand the topic.

Recent Reviews from our Parents

Jane started tutoring my daughter, who was top set GCSE, after she achieved poorly in her mock exams. Jane was able to get my daughter to understand the higher concepts and to really unpick the more complex questions. By the time of the GCSE exams, she was confident, happy and expecting good results. My daughter achieved a Grade 8, her love of Maths was reignited and she decided to continue by studying A-Level Maths.

By Lynne (Mother of student)

What can I say, when I asked my son what he thought of Jane he said 5/5 with no hesitation. She has made him so much more confident going into his maths re-take. This time he said he answered all the questions, made sure he put all his workings out down, which is a big improvement on his previous two attempts.  I would not have any problems recommending Jane and Tutors that Count to anyone. I just wish we had known of them earlier. And, by the way, my son passed his Maths GCSE retake and has now gone on to get an electrical apprenticeship- thank you Jane!
